As a car owner, you’re always taking into consideration how often you should service your vehicle. You always want to make sure that your vehicle is in tip-top shape! But one of the most common questions people ask is how often they should actually get car maintenance.
Car Maintenance Reminder System
If you’re an owner of a newer car then you might have a built-in maintenance reminder system. In-vehicle reminder systems like these take a number of factors into account. This would include alerting you of oil changes, fluid checks, and various other services. Treat this system as a guide on when to have a check up on your car, it knows what it’s doing. That being said, you should still change your oil regularly even if the alert system doesn’t come on.
Mileage-Based Service
Anyone who has driven a vehicle twenty years ago or prior may already know about this one. Likewise, if you’re driving a model of a vehicle that is from the 90s or prior you should know about this. Considering that these vehicles didn’t have complex computers in them like today you had to keep track of everything yourself. This normally happens under two separate circumstances: cars driven in “normal” circumstances and cars driven in “severe” operating systems. “Severe” conditions change from carmaker to carmaker but here are some of the common ones:
- Extremely hot, cold, or dusty climates
- Sustained stop-and-go driving
- Carrying heavy loads or towing a trailer
You should, of course, consult your driver’s manual to see what other severe conditions may be. If you’re driving an older vehicle your driver’s manual is your guide on when to get serviced. If you’re driving under normal conditions then you should be all right for a few thousand miles. Often times your manual will tell you to get your oil changed every 3,000 miles, but with newer oils on the market, you might be able to spare an extra 2,000 miles!
